    Abstract

In several experiments done in controlled environment rooms under divergent air and soil temperatures and air humidities, fruit shape (expressed as the width/height ratio) was determined throughout the season. Contrary to a number of reports on field surveys, fruit shape showed little or no influence of environmental factors. Seed number per fruit was not affected at all. As fruit shape is thought to be related to seed number, it is postulated that in the field climatic factors influence fruit shape via effects on seed formation during the flower and fruitlet stages, and that the environment has no further effect.
