Abstract

The archaeological project has uncovered traces of the terror at the former Sobibor camp, telling us what happened there. As such, it is an ongoing witness to the past. Over time, the site has been transformed from a landscape of terror into a landscape of memory. Particularly in the case of Sobibor, however, the memory landscape which is more than just the physical landscape of the site, includes more traces of memory, such as witness accounts and oral history. This chapter traces the development of the memorialisation and monumentalisation of Sobibór, from the 1940s and 1950s until the recent realization of the international memorial site. The memorialisation of Sobibór became increasingly international, with its memory eventually gaining an established position within global Holocaust memory.
