Fresh vegetables from the desert

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleProfessional

Abstract

In the Middle East, food security and food safety are high on the agenda since
the food crisis of 2007-2008. Food is mainly imported from nearby countries.
Especially during the summer the prices of fresh produce are high, because
there is not much production in the region itself. Because of the high prices
and low quality of products from neighbouring countries, various programs
are now aiming to improve the production system. An important issue is the
reduction of water use, since water is very scarce in a large part of the region.
