Extremely slow desorption and limited bioaccumulation of BC-associated PAHs

Abstract

Combustion-derived PAH are very strongly sorbed to their particulate carrier (i.e., soot, charcoal, or black carbon). A bioaccumulation study was conducted using the aquatic worm Lumbriculus variegatus to measure true bioavailability of the PAH (anthracene, BaP, phenanthrene, etc.). Results from the supercritical fluid extractions showed that generally only very small PAH fractions were released. Estimated time scales required for removal of PAH from extremely slow sites into water amounted to several millennia for traffic soot, oil soot, coal, and charcoal.
