Abstract
The importance of the relation between groundwater and surface water is demonstrated by the impact of water quality standards on permissible nitrogen losses at farm level. The effects of the intended fertilization reduction measures on agricultural production justify a thorough examination of the relationship between environmental compartments. Mathematical models can play an important role in assessing pollution and predicting effects of measures. The dependence of surface water contamination on groundwater discharge necessitates a sound description of this relation in a regional simulation model. Outlines of the linear systems approach and the discharge layer approach in the ANIMO model are presented.
