Abstract

At the end of the cultivation period a considerable amount of nitrate and phosphate is still present in the water in slabs and in the irrigation system. To reduce the emission of this amount of nitrate and phosphate a strategy was developed to use the plant to use this nitrate and phosphate in the last few weeks of the cultivation period. This however should be done without affecting the production or quality of the lasts fruits to be harvested. The strategy consisted of a gradual decrease over the last five weeks of the cultivation of nitrate, EC and water quantity in the supply. The ammonium to nitrate level was increased to acidify the slabs and release eventual precipitated phosphate. Chloride was used to replace nitrate as anion in the supply to allow to maintain proper levels of cations, notably potassium, in the supply and slab.
