Effects of ingredient parical sizes and binders on characterisctics of fecal waste of tra catfish (Pangasionodon hyphophthalmus)

The culture of Tra catfish in the Mekong Delta has been expanding in the last decade. However, there are many problems with this growth. One of these is decreasing of fish digestibility because of increasing to use cheap plant ingredients. Although using plant-derived protein sources is certainly lowering feed price, this could lead to many negative effects such as reducing digestibility, deducting growth … because of an increase dietary levels of non-starch polysaccharide (NSP). Moreover, both levels and characteristics of NSP might show the same effects. A problem is mentioned that whether and how binder levels and technology (especially particle sizes) affect on characteristics of fecal waste in Tra catfish. In this study, particle sizes by grinding at 0.8mm versus 1.0mm of high-cellulose-content ingredient (sunflower meal, being included at 17%) with 3 different levels of guar gum (0, 0.3, and 0.6%) will be compared. Three hundred and sixty Tra catfish (~85 per fish) will be stocked into each of 18 170L-tank at an outdoor water temperature (around 29°C) with flow through water. Fish were fed six diet treatments (three tanks per each). Chemical compositions of fecal waste in GIT - gastro intestinal tract - of Tra catfish will be determined. The result will be discussed further in the Conference.
