Effects of ammonium and pH on growth and potassium uptake by the ectomycorrhizal fungus laccaria bicolor in pure culture

Abstract

In growth and potassium uptake experiments with L. bicolor under unbuffered conditions, acidification of the medium depended on the ammonium concentration, making it necessary to distinguish between ammonium and pH effects. The increase in biomass production in the presence of ammonium was a direct effect of ammonium, whereas the decrease in radial growth should be ascribed to acidification of the medium. There was no direct effect of ammonium on the potassium uptake. In unbuffered solutions potassium uptake was reduced due to acidification of the medium.
