Abstract
The effects of increasing sodium concentration in the root environment on growth, yield and on sodium absorption on gerbera in a closed cultivation system was tested. No significant differences in flower production or quality were found to the highest sodium concentration. Gerbera appears to absorb relatively much sodium, at an average concentration in the drain of 10 mmol/l, the uptake concentration is 1.6 mmol/l. The limit value for sodium can be set safely at 10 – 12 mmol / on basis of this test. In case of high sodium, the depletion of potassium is a risk, it is therefore advisable to adjust the K-dosage regularly.
