Abstract
Previous research showed a relationship between the orthophosphate content and the pH in faeces in fattening pigs and weaned piglets. In this report an exploratory study was carried out to determine whether the orthophosphate content in faeces and slurry of fattening pigs is also higher by adding benzoic acid to the feed. Benzoic acid influences the pH of the urine and the slurry. The research shows a lower pH decrease than expected. The percentage orthophosphate relative to total phosphate was low in the mixed slurry, but was about 25% in the fresh urine and faeces.
