Abstract

Land under human influence, such as urban, industrial, traffic, mining, and military areas are characterized by a great diversity of soils with specific properties. Some are close to natural soils, but most are greatly modified or even deliberately constructed. These soils of highly anthropized areas render a wide range of ecosystem services, provided that their functions (e.g. carbon storage, habitat for biodiversity) are not altered or that restoration operations are carried out.
