    Industry has plans for the development of an intermediate pork segment, whereby the fattening pigs will be housed on a surface area of 1.0 m2 per animal. This study analysed the economic consequences of this bigger living area. The production costs will rise by around 2 euro-cents per kg slaughter weight in a newbuild situation and 5 to 8 euro-cents per kg if the new area requirements are met by keeping fewer animals in an existing barn
