    Abstract

With the aim of reducing the negative effects of mussel seed capture on the ecosystem of the Dutch Wadden Sea, the Dutch mussel industry needs to gradually switch to the collection of mussel seed through mussel seed capture installations (MZIs). The objective of this study is to describe: (1) the negative economic effects of mussel seed capture installations on other fishing activities as a consequence of the loss of fishing grounds, (2) the expected total investments in mussel seed capture installations in the Wadden Sea and the Eastern Scheldt, (3) the positive effects of creating and using mussel seed capture installations on the regional economy and (4) the economic consequences for the mussel industry.
