An important part of the pollution in sediments of ditches and watercourses in agricultural regions of the Netherlands is caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Sediments were spread out on the borders of the adjacent agricultural fields. The fate and transformation of PAH in the sediment in the short term were investigated and the results of PAH measurements of the borders of watercourses were compared with those from samples taken in the middle of the fields between the watercourses (non-influenced zone).
