Abstract
Urban open spaces can contribute to biodiversity conservation. While urban ornithology studies are abundant in temperate countries, there is a lack of them in the tropical regions that offer landscape design guidelines for promoting bird diversity. This study proposes guidelines applicable at three scales: local, urban, and landscape. The first focuses on small interventions at the parcel scale and the adoption of native vegetation; the second provides strategies to promote a mosaic of open spaces; and the third addresses the connection of urban space with the surrounding landscape. In total, 21 guidelines were produced and applied in an urban area of the municipality of Serra, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Additionally, four new guidelines were derived from contextual demands. The study demonstrates the applicability of these guidelines and their potential for incorporation into public policies aimed at promoting the diversity of native bird species.
