Abstract

Biohydrogen (H2) production using two different types of substrates was studied in anaerobic small scale batch reactors. Different environments were sampled and sequentially subject to different types of pretreatment methods in order to obtain enriched bacteria populations used to start up the bioreactors. Experimental data demonstrated significant differences in H2 production regarding the various substrates and pre-treatment methods used. The described process opens the way towards the dual benefits of renewable energy generation (H2) with simultaneous wastewater treatment.
