Abstract

Within the project Het Nieuwe Verwerken, Wageningen University & Research and partners have looked at alternative methods for disinfection of flower bulbs. Various means and methods have been tested. Ozone, Jet 5 and hydrogen peroxide seem to have little prospect for disinfection of bulbs and process water for various reasons. Supercritical CO2 and cold plasma are interesting techniques, but the costs of development still hinder application in flower bulbs. For UV, development of a good practical application is required. ECA-water is ready for practice. For proper application, an accurate measurement of the concentration of active chlorine is necessary, and the factors that reduce the concentration of chlorine must be eliminated by filtration as much as possible.
