Abstract

Soil compaction is a major threat to the soil functions for agriculture. In this research, several experiments were conducted in the field, in soil columns and laboratory. The main objective was to improve knowledge on fundamental processes on effects of subsoil compaction on plant development and the physical behavior of the soil, enabling targeted advice to farmers, consultants and authorities on how to measure, prevent and eliminate subsoil compaction. The research indicates that roots can adapt to compacted soils and that even minor soil compaction can significantly affect crop development. Future research should focus more on the relationship between plant development and compaction and the extent to which deep-rooting crops can eliminate soil compaction.
