Abstract

Both, public and private stakeholders in the agricultural sector, have expressed the need for integrated assessment of the sustainability performance of individual farms to be able to steer towards improved performance. Harmonisation of sustainability assessment can give farmers more clarity about expected outcomes, create opportunities for coordination on incentives between parties (public and private), and reduce administrative burdens compared to the situation, where each party uses its own system. At the same time, it can underpin a movement towards a more performance-based approach in national agricultural policies. This report describes a proposal for a harmonised farm-level set of KPIs that would enable a comprehensive approach to advancing the main sustainability objectives of Dutch agriculture. This core set is developed for the dairy and arable farming sectors. The proposed core KPI set is the result of a multi-year research project commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN), which combined scientific and practical knowledge, including the execution of field pilots. In these pilots data collection and KPI calculation were tested with prototypes. The proposed core KPI set is not a finalised design; rather, it is a well-substantiated proposal, accompanied by recommendations for further development.
