Abstract
The curve number equation is derived assuming an instantaneous unit hydrograph, an initial abstraction, and a constant rainfall intensity. The derivation shows that the curve number equation is part of a family of single parameter instantaneous unit hydrographs, such as the linear reservoir, which when convoluted with the rainfall intensity yield the rising branch of a hydrograph. The resulting reformulation allows to incorporate the effect of rainfall intensity in the calculation of the cumulative discharge. This results in a different cumulative discharge notably for the same total rainfall at different recurrence intervals.
