Abstract

The application of type-based statistics requires an appropriate data basis. In contrast to classical flood frequency analyses, it is no longer sufficient to consider only one event per year, let alone only the flood peak. In this chapter, methods to separate flood events and the corresponding precipitation events are introduced. The methods are based on statistical threshold criteria and define flood events from daily discharges. In a second step, a hybrid causative-hydrograph-based flood typology is proposed that is explicitly designed for the use in the context of flood statistics and thus requires only few input data available for a long time period. As a result, samples of separated flood events that are classified into five flood types—three rainfall-driven flood types, two snowmelt-induced flood types—are derived that then can be used for application in type-based flood statistics.
