Although Turkey is now the only country to which it is indigenous, fallow deer have been introduced into large parts of Europe. Fallow deer that either escaped or were released have formed populations across the Nteherlands. Their core distribution areas are the coastal dunes and the Veluwe. Fallow deer refer deciduous and mixed forest in combination with open, herb-rich areas. In the Netherlands, this makes the coastal dunes an ideal habitat for the species. Over the most recent period covered by this atlas, fallow deer population numbers have increased, even in areas where annual culling takes place.
