In order to determine what a desired degree of forest regeneration should be in Natura 2000 forest habitats on the Veluwe, an analysis was made of existing data sources of forest regeneration and development. This was related to collected information on densities of ungulates in 25 subareas on the Veluwe. An analysis was made of the general regeneration process of trees. The extent of forest regeneration was broken down into density, frequency and species composition. The mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia) has been identified as an indicator species for the presence of sufficient opportunities for the occurrence of a favourable degree of forest rejuvenation.
