Abstract

This chapter summarizes key findings from recent studies on consumer food waste in China, focusing on four major contexts: households, restaurants, public canteens, and food delivery services. Food waste patterns vary widely across income levels, urban-rural divides, and food service formats. Evidence shows that systemic factors—such as culture, economic development, and policy gaps—play a central role. Addressing food waste in China requires aligning economic incentives, platform designs, and institutional norms to prevent waste at its source.
