Abstract
Greenhouse horticulture is actively working on reducing the use of fossil fuels and CO2 emission. At present greenhouse horticulture uses CO2 as a fertiliser for crops and this CO2 is mainly obtained from the smoke gasses of gas-fired CHP units and heating boilers used in this sector. A limited amount of the CO2 required is purchased externally. In the future, without CO2 emission or natural gas consumption, the sector will lose its internal supply of CO2 and a larger external CO2 supply will be needed. The projected external CO2 requirement in 2030 varies from 1.8 Mton in the pessimistic scenario to 3.0 Mton in the optimistic scenario. In the optimistic scenario there is more economic growth, a larger greenhouse acreage and a higher CO2 dosage per m2 greenhouse. The opposite is the case in the pessimistic scenario. To achieve a reduction in CO2 a tariff structure is required for CO2 supply that is based less on fixed costs and more on variable costs.
