Abstract

As part of a larger project, EcoChar was looked at as an addition to agricultural land. EcoChar is a pyrolysis product based on animal manure, from a process developed by project partner Mavitec. The EcoChar appears to be suitable as an addition to agricultural land. The fertilizing value of the EcoChar must be deducted from the standard fertilizer dose in advance. In this trial, two levels of annual EcoChar/green compost addition to sandy soil (0.8 en 1.6 kg per m2) were compared with an annual standard dose of champost of 1.0 kg per m2. After three annual doses, the organic matter content in the soils has increased by 1.2 and 1.7 %w/w above the level of 2.6 %w/w in the control. Adding EcoChar/green compost therefore does indeed lead to an increase in organic matter in arable soils.
