Abstract
BKN2021 comparison between 25 m and 2.5 m resolution maps; Effects on differences in area per BKN class when upscaling from 2.5 m to 25 m grid size. The Nature Base Map (Basiskaart Natuur) 2021 (BKN2021) is a raster data set (25×25 m) that includes the area of natural and semi-natural ecosystems in the Netherlands. The source data consist of vector files at a scale of1:10,000, which are first rasterised to 2.5×2.5 m grid cells, combined, and subsequently aggregated to 25×25 m during production. This report examines the differences in area that arise from this aggregation step. The Netherlands appears to be over 30,000 hectares larger when using 25 m grids compared to 2.5 m grids. The effects per BKN class range from 0.3 to 3.3 per cent and depend on the shape and size of contiguous areas. Linear elements such as roads and waterways are underrepresented in larger grid cells, whilst smaller areas lose a relatively greater proportion of their surface area due to their long borders. The report illustrates these differences using examples of land use patterns.
