Biotamonitoring Rijkswateren tot en met 2023: Deel I, Toestand en Trends conform KRW, KRM en OSPAR

Research output: Book/ReportReportProfessional

Abstract

Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), as the water quality manager, is responsible for monitoring chemical substances in biota (shellfish and fish) in the Dutch national waters. This biota monitoring aims to meet regulatory obligations, with the underlying goal of gaining insights into the water system and addressing questions about its status and trends for management purposes. Wageningen Marine Research conducts this monitoring program. The present report (Part I) primarily includes an assessment of the current status based on compliance with biota standards from the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), and OSPAR (Oslo and Paris Convention), which are established to protect human health and ecosystems. Additionally, temporal trends are identified and statistically tested where possible. For each substance group (chapters 2 to 8), the measurement results, standard compliance, and trends are discussed to present each group as detailed as possible. Chapter 9 explicitly addresses the WFD and OSPAR standard compliance when reporting to the EU and OSPAR. In chapter 10, the results are discussed by substance group, and in chapter 11, conclusions and recommendations are provided. Part II describes the Applied Methods (Sneekes et al., 2024). The program plan outlines all components of the biota monitoring requested by RWS WVL for 2018-2023 (van de Wolfshaar et al., 2018). For 2024–2029, a revised program plan has been developed for specific components (a public version is in preparation).
