Abstract
The chapter illustrates the benefits of using ecoregional and bioeconomic models jointly to address economic and environmental objectives. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of bioeconomic models that can be employed in joint economic and biophysical analysis are discussed. Three variants of a bioeconomic model developed for Southern Mali to address the tradeoffs and complimentarities among production, economic welfare and sustainability indicators that result from a simulated fertilizer subsidy, are then applied.
