Abstract
What if we could use the power of plants to create a very strong adhesive? Lignin is a natural binder that occurs in woody materials, like trees, grasses and straw. By carefully researching the properties and characteristics of the materials, as well as ways to process it, Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (part of University & Research) has been able to adjust it in such a way that it can replace many fossil-based adhesives. This material is currently used in for instance high performance panels for furniture or in bitumen and asphalt.
