Abstract
Niek Koning advocates a new interpretation of the problems Africa faces today which focuses on the interaction between the evolution of the world economy and the development of Africa. The world economy has resulted in an agricultural depression that also drags along the rest of society. In order to solve this problem, market-oriented reforms have to be accompanied by import duties on foreign agricultural products.
