Abstract

Sustainability agreements in the supply chain refer to voluntary agreements between supply chain parties (including farmers) aimed at improving the sustainability of agricultural product production beyond legal obligations. What is the role of the government in this context? Which promising policy options, from incentives to regulations, can stimulate or facilitate sustainability agreements in the chain to make sustainability more rewarding at the farm level? This study outlines the policy theory and promising policy options based on literature and case studies, distinguishing the government’s tasks according to the type and phase of sustainability initiatives. Special attention is given to the role of Article 210a of the CMO Regulation.
