Abstract

In its work for reports by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), such as the Assessment of the Dutch Human Environment, the Environmental Data Compendium and the National Nature Outlook, the Statutory Research Tasks Unit for Nature & the Environment (WOT-NM) uses various base maps of natural and semi-natural habitats, such as the Land Use Database of the Netherlands and the management types map. When using these maps, it is important that the results are not affected by errors, which would lead to inconsistencies between different types of output information. This report describes the design of a standardised procedure for compiling annual updates of the Geodatabase on Nature and Landscape (Basisbestand Natuur en Landschap, BNL). The BNL is a raster database with a resolution of 2.5 metres and consists of several layers. It is generated automatically with the use of GIS scripts. TOP10NL (an object-oriented topographical database of the Netherlands) is the geometric basis of the map and the management types map (IMNa) is the source database for the areas and types of natural and semi-natural habitats. The map is a key resource in Dutch nature policy used for allocating subsidies for conservation management and determining ecological quality. The BNL is used for producing the scaled-down management types map, the Land Use Database of the Netherlands, various Environmental Data Compendium indicators and models such as the Model for Nature Policy and the Natural Capital Model.
