Abstract

In a circular livestock sector, residual streams from the human food industry are processed into animal feed. One of these residual streams consists of dry bakery by-products that can replace grains in pig feed (circular feed). At a pig farm in Lunteren (NL), an experiment was conducted with weaned piglets that were fed with standard feed or with feed including bakery by-products (35%) in the pelleted feed. During 2 rounds, the results of 560 piglets with and 560 piglets without bakery by-products were compared, a total of 1120 piglets. The piglets with the circular feed consumed the same amount of feed and grew as fast as the piglets with the standard feed. Feed conversion ratios were similar. There was no difference in feed intake between the different periods in the rearing period. Health problems during the study were hardly observed and there was 0.7% mortality. The conclusion is that it is quite possible to replace part of the grains in the piglet feed with bakery by-products, resulting in comparable results with a standard feed.
