Autochtone genenbronnen van bomen en struiken in 25 gebieden van Staatsbosbeheer: Een analyse van 31 jaar aan inventarisatiedata, op zoek naar kansen voor in situ behoud van genenbronnen

Abstract

Conservation of genetic diversity in trees and shrubs is important to sustain vital and resilient forests and landscapes in the future. Autochthonous populations in the Netherlands are under pressure, for many species the local genetic material is rare or even lost (Maes, 2016). Staatsbosbeheer, the State Forest Service, has designated 25 areas for autochthonous trees and shrubs. Based on existing inventory data, in this report an assessment is made of the potential for in situ conservation of autochthonous genetic resources in these areas, according to criteria from the EUFORGEN framework. There are species that still occur in large numbers in the 25 areas, but also species whose numbers are too small for sustainable in situ conservation of the genetic resources. In a case study, the inventory data of the Speulder- en Sprielderbos were further examined and the distribution of autochthonous populations over the area was analysed. The results may support Staatsbosbeheer to work towards in situ conservation of genetic resources in these areas.
