The European Community aims to create a uniform higher education area allowing students to choose between a wide range of high quality courses with a quick and transparent recognition and transfer of credits (Bologna declaration 1999: ec.europa.eu/education/policies/educ/bologna/bologna_en.html). The approach envisions an unlimited mobility for students and teaching staff, by streamlining academic systems and calendars between countries/institutions. A consequence is that students can choose from a wide range of degree studies and curriculums, and that institutions can or have to compete for (top) students. Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) actively adapts its education and research structure to meet the aims of the Bologna Declaration. The mission of WUR is to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life . Within this mission a priority theme is climate-resistant coastal zones. With an increased interest in coastal and marine affairs, the interest in aquatic food production is also growing. Higher education in the Netherlands starts with a 3-4 year Bachelor degree, followed by a 2 year Masters degree. Students can complete their training with a 4-year PhD study, which is the highest degree offered in the Netherlands. No 100% aquaculture education is offered at Bachelor level, although various programs offer a limited number of aquaculture related courses. Once reaching MSc level various marine-aquatic science specializations are offered at WUR, including (a) marine ecology, (b) marine and coastal resource management, (c) fisheries, (d) aquaculture, (e) marine environmental quality and (f) governance of marine and coastal systems. Important characteristic of MSc training are (a) full English program, (b) science focused with 50% of credits assigned to practical training and research and (c) skills and competence training and (d) options for b-g interaction. Where presently MSc students are recruited worldwide, with home market the Netherlands, in the future the home market will become to the European community. The academic calendar will also be adjusted to 4 study periods per year, while students will get more options for orientation, interdisciplinarity and skills training. Competences learned should be identified, presented transparently, communicated and examined.
