Abstract
As a policy framework for biofuel production and consumption in the United States and the European Union started to take on its initial contours some 20 years ago, a need gradually arose to investigate the potential market, environmental and welfare implications of these new policies. This need intensified later with the significant increase in food commodity prices and environmental concerns. The policymakers were under pressure to rethink biofuel strategies in their countries. Nowadays, the concepts of a circular bioeconomy, the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy, among many others, are discussed in the European Union. As these new policy frameworks will affect the markets in the European Union and the rest of the world, it is essential to study their potential and observed effects.
