Projects per year
In the Dutch decree on low-emission housing of livestock maximum emission values have been set as from 2020 for newly build barns. De maximum emission value for broiler breeders has been set at 0.250 kg per animal place per year. Housing systems that comply with this value, and comply with demands with regard to environmental impact, animal welfare, applicability, et cetera, are lacking. In this report, results are presented of ammonia emission measurements on a broiler breeder farm. In one barn of this farm, a manure aeration system was installed, consisting of aeration pipes on the floor of the manure pit onder the elevated slats, for drying of the manure. This drying was intended to reduce the microbial conversion of uric acid and undigested proteins into ammonia. An almost identical barn on the farm was used a control barn. The measurements show that the aeration system did not reduce emissions of ammonia. Suggestions are presented to make the system more effective. This study has been conducted by Wageningen Livestock Research and was commissioned by the Consortium Breeders In Balance and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
