Afvangst CO2 en tijdelijke opslag in een CO2-batterij : resultaten van CO2-levering uit een CO2-batterij van Value Maritime met CO2 afkomstig uit de scheepvaart

Abstract

The greenhouse horticulture sector faces the major challenge of eliminating fossil-based CO2 emissions, while CO2 remains essential for optimizing phtosynthesis of plants. Value Maritime has developed a CO2 battery that potentially enables the application of the Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU) principle for CO2 supply to greenhouse horticulture. With this technology, CO2 is captured from cleaned flue gases – originating, for example, from maritime shipping or combined heat and power (CHP) installations – temporarily stored in an amine-based solution, and released for greenhouse dosing when required. The objective of this project is to evaluate the application of this technology by: 1. Assessing the quality of the captured and stored CO2 and identifying any components that may be potentially harmful to crops. 2. Conducting an indicative economic evaluation to gain insight into the feasibility of the CO2 battery. The quality of the CO2 and potential phytotoxic effects were investigated in a greenhouse trial with cucumber conducted from January to June 2025. CO2 from the CO2 battery and from OCAP was supplied to two greenhouse compartments under almost identical cultivation and climate conditions. The results showed no negative effects on crop growth, yield, or plant health. Gas analyses detected the presence of 2-butene and/or isobutene in CO2 from the battery. However, the measured concentrations are not considered harmful after dilution in the greenhouse. Monitoring of potential longer-term effects and of the detected gas components remains recommended. The economic analysis resulted in an estimated cost of approximately €49 per ton of CO2, assuming fixed energy prices, full utilisation of the battery capacity, and an SDE++ subsidy of €100 per ton of CO₂. Based on this analysis, CO2 from the CO2 battery can be competitive with existing CO2 sources, noting that the results are intended as indicative rather than project-specific.
