Abstract

As an alternative to the cubic box system for flower bulbs, Wageningen University & Research has designed a “Supergaasbak”. This is a large box of about 3 * 1.5 * 0.3 m. Because of the thin layer of bulbs, the air is not blown through the bulbs, but along it. After testing in a wind tunnel and model calculations, the following conclusions were drawn: For the removal of ethylene and water vapor during storage after drying, “Supergaasbakken” with a layer thickness of 25 - 30 cm are suitable. With 5% fusarium infected tulip bulbs the energy consumption is reduced by 60% compared to storage in cubic boxes. The Supergaasbak is less suitable for quick drying just after harvesting. It is recommended to experiment on a practical scale in a storage cell with a Supergaasbak of approximately 1,5 x 3 m and 25 - 30 cm high.
