Abstract

The invention relates to a process for isolating proteins from solid protein- containing biomass selected from vegetable biomass, algae, seaweed and combinations thereof, the process comprising the following steps: a) providing a dispersion of the solid protein-containing biomass in an aqueous liquid; b) extracting protein from the biomass by keeping the dispersion at a temperature in the range of from 70 to 150°C during an extraction time; c) separating the dispersion into a protein-comprising extract and protein-depleted biomass; and d) recovering protein from the extract, wherein the pH of the dispersion during extraction step b) is in the range of from 12.3 to 13.5.
