Abstract

The project ZAFIRA (Zero discharge Aquaculture by Farming in Integrated Recalculating Systems in Asia) will focus on the combination of Western recalculating and traditional Chinese Techniques to outline a zero nutrient discharge facility. Different (local and commercial) feeds will be evaluated in growth experiments for salt and freshwater fish. Different treatments with ozone will be tested to valorise the sludge for later use through the production of single cell protein by bacteria or to be used as feed for nerves or sea cucumber. The each organism the nutrient balance and growth performance under these special conditions will be determined. Experiments will be done first on lab scale and be up scaled to semi-farm level to prove their applied character. From these experiments derived data will be used to develop a bioenergetics model of processes within such systemsThe project ZAFIRA (Zero discharge Aquaculture by Farming in Integrated Recalculating Systems in Asia) will focus on the combination of Western recalculating and traditional Chinese Techniques to outline a zero nutrient discharge facility.
