Abstract
This chapter assesses climate change adaptation policies, practices and implementation challenges in Ethiopia. The findings suggest that the risk of climate change is well recognized and significant progress has been made in formulating several climate-related policies, strategies and plans to reduce vulnerability and build resilience. Des¬pite this progress, however, there is a deficit in government-led planned adaptation actions. Most of the adapta¬tion projects and programmes are financed by international organizations and may not be sustainable. Small¬holder farmers, on the other hand, are taking autonomous adaptation measures to combat the risk of climate change and improve their livelihoods, even though they are facing financial, sociocultural, infrastructural, land and labour constraints that impede their efforts. Overall, there is a need to simultaneously address the barriers to autonomous and government-led adaptation measures for Ethiopia to be ready to adapt to future impacts of climate change.
