Abstract

China's economic growth rate has slowed down in recent years. Existing literature mainly discusses its reasons, effects and coping strategies from the macro perspective. Different from the existing research, this paper uses the Chinese Household Income Project Survey data to construct a synthetic cohort-level sample that can be compared before and after the economic slowdown, establishes a difference model and usesthe 2SLS estimation method to identify the impact of economic growth slowdown on individuals’income and employment. It finds that economic growth slowdown has no significant impact on individual income, but it has significantly negative impact on employment. Exposure to a 1 percentage point larger local shock reduces employment rate by 2 percentage points. The magnitude of the impacts varies across different demographic groups. To be specific, those who are female, younger and with primary or lower education are more likely to lose their jobs than others. We argue that irrational expectation, labor market mismatch and destructive innovation are three main mechanisms in which economic growth slowdown affects individuals. In order to cope with the downward pressure on the economy, the government should adopt policies to stimulate consumption, encourage innovation and increase human capital investment.
