Project Details
Description
With the upcoming ban on beak trimming in poultry poultry farmers (with laying hens, broiler breeders or turkeys) are searching for solutions to prevent injurious pecking behaviour. Both research and practice have indicated that light has an influence on pecking behaviour. There are however many aspects of light: light intensity, spectrum, distribution, frequency. There is little knowledge on how these aspects influence bird behaviour, separately and in combination with each other. Recently there have been developed many new lighting systems for poultry houses, but the functionality has not yet been proven and from some features it is unknown what the possible benefits are.
To actually make a step forward it is necessary to have an overview of all these initiatives and combine the outcomes of various trials to obtain knowledge in a more efficient way.
The aim of this project is to get an overview of the state of the art with regards to light in relation to injurious pecking behaviour. This goal will be reached by literature review and interviews with manufacturers and installers of lighting systems.
