Project Details

Description

The most important objectives of fishery and nature policy are to conserve the natural resources and ensure a balanced and sustainable exploitation whereby the impact of fishery activities on marine ecosystems in the Caribbean Netherlands needs to kept to a minimum.

The coastal fishery on the Saba Bank and St Eustatius mainly targets lobster and reef fish using traps. The indiscriminate trap fishery may damage the vulnarable tropical marine ecosystems due to ghost fishing of lost traps and by the bycatch and discarding of unwanted ecological fish species like herbivores.

The aim of the project is to conduct a series of robust experiments in relation to ghost fishing, biodegradable panels and escape vents in order to be able to advise Min EZ on which changes should be made to fishtraps to reduce the risk of ghost fishing and bycatch of unwanted species.
