Unravelling the mesoscale organization of shallow convective clouds for better climate projection

Project: PhD

Project Details

Description

The tropical oceans are blanketed by shallow convective clouds, which cool the planet. These clouds arise rom a subtle interplay between clouds and circulations. My research focusses on unravelling the cloud-circulation coupling and its sensitivity to changes in climate, as this is crucial for understanding how rapidly the earth is warming. I will research the processes by studying observations and large-eddy simulations in order to develop an understanding for how shallow mesoscale circulations develop and decay, how they influence the mesoscale distribution of deep tropical convection and how they regulate earth’s radiative balance.
