standards. The European Commission has published strategic guidelines with common priorities and general objectives. On the basis of these guidelines, the EU Member States have drawn up a long-term plan to stimulate the aquaculture sector in their country. The Dutch government has done so as well.

 

The Dutch plan comprises strategic innovation themes for the Dutch aquaculture for the coming years. appointed where the research for the Dutch aquaculture should need to focus on the coming years. These innovation themes are focused on the technical and economic sustainability of RAS. The main goal for the current project is to identify critical water concentrations for selected water quality parameters. In 2017, the research focuses on nitrogenous waste in the culture water of eel in the form of nitrate levels, one of the most important species for the Dutch aquaculture sector. Improvement of animal welfare is the central goal for this research line.
