Project Details

Description

Sint Eustatius- part of the Dutch Caribbean- aims for economic development in combination with preservation and development of its ecosystems. The concept of ecosystem services offers opportunities to link economic activities sustainably to the rich biodiversity of the island.

This project focusses on providing Small Tropical Islands Solutions (STIS) for the challenges of small tropical islands in general, with Statia being a "model" island.  This is done by developing and providing concepts for sustainable exploitation of tropical (small-island) ecosystem services, including an appropriate governance structure. Furthermore, the program supports the development of the multifunctional knowledge and education centre at St Eustatius (CNSI) for dissemination of results and capacity building in the region.

The program identifies four major themes: biodiversity (functions and threats), ecosystem services (sustainable tourism masterplan, food production, regulation of nutrients), governance (spatial and socioeconomic conflicts and possibilities), and education.
