Project: LVVN project

Project Details

Description

Circular and Climate Neutral Society (CCNS) related projects require a multidisciplinary evaluation of synergies and trade-offs of transition related innovations to not overlook unwanted side effects. This evaluation is complex since it requires integration and weighing of viewpoints from highly different angles and expertise, each one with their own jargon, prioritizations and views on impact. In this project, we will explore the use of the Butterfly Framework to assess synergies and trade-offs of climate solutions from different disciplines and provide examples in the thematic areas of agriculture, urban and marine. The project aims to develop a methodology and, by applying it on four case studies, to increase the understanding of synergies and trade-offs, by looking through the eyes of different experts and to make the synergies and trade-offs insightful through a multidisciplinary approach. When a climate solution is applied to one thematic area, it will cause synergies and trade-offs with the objectives of other areas. The Butterfly framework will be used in this project to define the assessment objectives for synergies and trade-offs. The Butterfly framework presents an overview of system relations on the level of the technical system, the ecological system, the socio-economic system, and their inter-relations. Through this research, we contribute to OneWUR's intent to advise decision makers on the interpretation of the synergies and trade-offs for selected interventions to contribute to a circular and climate neutral society.
